Best VPN for Hulu in 2026
Hulu is unique among major streaming services: it’s US-only. Unlike Netflix or Disney+, Hulu doesn’t have international versions. If you’re outside the US and want to access Hulu — for FX shows (The Bear, Shogun), Hulu originals, or the live TV service — you need a VPN.
We test 6 VPNs against Hulu from 4 international locations every week. Here are the Q2 2026 winners.
Headline answer
Reliably unblocking Hulu (Q2 2026):
- NordVPN — best overall, 95%+ success rate
- ExpressVPN — very close second
- Surfshark — cheapest reliable option
Sometimes working:
- Proton VPN Plus — US servers work ~70% of the time
- CyberGhost — depends on which US server
Not working:
- Mullvad, IVPN, free VPNs — 0-10% success
How Hulu’s VPN detection works
Hulu uses three layers of geo-blocking:
- IP detection — same as Netflix, blocks known VPN IP ranges
- Payment method check — requires a US payment method (credit card with US billing address, PayPal with US address, or US gift card)
- Account-region locking — your Hulu account is permanently registered to the country you signed up from
This makes Hulu harder than Netflix in one specific way: even with a working VPN, you can’t sign up for Hulu from outside the US without a US-billed payment method.
The setup that works
Step 1: Pick a working VPN
NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Surfshark from the list above. Sign up using the 30-day money-back guarantee.
Step 2: Get a US payment method
Three options:
- Real US credit card with US billing address — easiest if you have one (or a family member’s)
- US virtual card via Privacy.com — only works if you can verify a US address
- US Hulu gift card — purchased online (e.g., from MyGiftCardSupply, GameStop, Walmart). Most reliable for non-US residents. ~$25 for 1 month.
The gift card route is what we recommend for non-US residents.
Step 3: Sign up for Hulu through US VPN
- Connect to a US server (any city, but NYC and LA most reliable)
- Use private/incognito mode browser
- Go to hulu.com → Start Free Trial
- Use your US payment method (gift card most reliable)
- Use a US address (any address — Hulu doesn’t verify, but a public ZIP code like 10001 NYC works)
- Complete signup
Step 4: Use Hulu with VPN going forward
Once your account exists, you just connect to US VPN before opening Hulu. Login as normal.
If you ever change your billing method, you can update to a non-US card after the account is established and Hulu still typically lets you continue using the service (though they may eventually require a new US payment method).
Real-world performance (Q2 2026)
We tested from 4 international locations using each VPN’s US East server:
| VPN | From UK | From Germany | From Japan | From Australia |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 95% | 95% | 90% | 90% |
| ExpressVPN | 93% | 93% | 88% | 90% |
| Surfshark | 90% | 90% | 85% | 85% |
| CyberGhost | 70% | 70% | 60% | 60% |
| Proton VPN Plus | 75% | 75% | 60% | 55% |
| Mullvad | 0% | 0% | 0% | 0% |
NordVPN and ExpressVPN are basically tied. Surfshark trails by a small margin.
Hulu without Live TV vs With Live TV
Hulu basic ($8/mo with ads, $18/mo no ads): Works through VPN once your account is set up. This is what most international viewers want.
Hulu + Live TV ($83/mo): Includes live cable channels. The live TV portion checks your IP location every time you stream live channels. A VPN that works for on-demand can fail mid-live-stream when Hulu’s geo-check fires. NordVPN’s “Smart Play” feature handles this better than competitors; ExpressVPN is also reliable. Surfshark has more live-TV interruptions in our testing.
For live TV streaming, NordVPN is the safest pick.
The Disney+ Hulu ESPN+ bundle
A US Disney+ subscription can be bundled with Hulu and ESPN+ for $21.99/mo total — significantly cheaper than buying them separately. If you’re a non-US viewer using a VPN, this bundle gives you three streaming services for the price of one and a half.
The bundle is tied to your Disney+ account. Sign up for Disney+ first (with US VPN + US payment method), then add Hulu via the bundle in your Disney+ account settings.
Speed for Hulu streaming
Hulu streams up to 4K HDR for certain content (originals, some movies). The VPN needs to maintain 25+ Mbps for 4K.
All three of our top picks (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark) easily maintain 4K-capable bandwidth from international locations to US servers, except for very long distances (Australia to US, sometimes drops to 1080p).
What about Hulu Originals?
Hulu’s original content (The Bear, Shogun, Only Murders in the Building, The Handmaid’s Tale, Welcome to Wrexham, etc.) is exclusive to Hulu — not available on any other service. For these, the VPN-to-Hulu setup is the only legal access route from outside the US (other than waiting for international licensing to another platform, which can take months or never happen).
Common Hulu VPN errors
“Based on your location, we cannot complete your request”: VPN IP detected. Try a different US server.
“There seems to be an issue. Please try again”: Generic error, often VPN-related. Refresh, try different server.
“Your account is currently outside the US”: Hulu detected an IP change during your session. Don’t switch servers mid-watch. Use a stable VPN connection.
“Hulu is not available outside the US”: Your VPN isn’t actually masking your IP. Check that the VPN is connected and there’s no DNS leak (visit dnsleaktest.com to verify).
Mobile app vs web
The Hulu mobile app does additional checks beyond IP. To use Hulu on mobile with VPN:
- Web version in mobile browser: Easiest. Works the same as desktop.
- Native mobile app: Need to spoof location. On Android: use a location-spoofing app. On iOS: harder without jailbreak.
We default to web on mobile.
Hulu on TVs and streaming sticks
- Apple TV: Install NordVPN or ExpressVPN Apple TV app → connect → launch Hulu app
- Fire TV: Install NordVPN or ExpressVPN Fire TV app → connect → launch Hulu app
- Roku: Roku doesn’t allow VPN apps. Configure VPN at router level instead.
- Smart TVs: Generally don’t allow VPN apps. Use router-level VPN.
For TV usage, an Apple TV or Fire TV with a native VPN app is the cleanest setup.
Cost-per-region analysis
For Hulu specifically:
- Surfshark $50/year + Hulu $96/year ($8 ads-supported plan) = $146/year total → $0.39/day
- NordVPN $105/year + Hulu $96/year = $201/year total → $0.54/day
- ExpressVPN $100/year + Hulu $96/year = $196/year total → $0.53/day
Surfshark wins on total cost. NordVPN wins on reliability margin.
Disclosure
We use affiliate links for NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost, and Proton VPN. Hulu doesn’t offer a public affiliate program outside the US. Commissions don’t affect our rankings — Surfshark pays less than ExpressVPN and we ranked them equally on Hulu reliability. See our affiliate disclosure.
Using a VPN to access Hulu from outside the US violates Hulu’s terms of service. The most common consequence is a temporary account lockout. You’re responsible for understanding the implications in your jurisdiction.
