Best VPN for Disney+ in 2026
Disney+ has gotten meaner about VPNs in 2025-2026. The Marvel and Star Wars release strategy — premium releases drop in different countries at different times — makes Disney+ one of the most VPN-targeted streaming services. We test 6 VPNs against 4 Disney+ regions every week. Here’s what’s working in Q2 2026.
Headline answer
Reliably unblocking Disney+ (90%+ in Q2 2026 weekly tests):
- NordVPN — most consistent across all 4 regions
- Surfshark — close second, much cheaper
- ExpressVPN — historically the favorite, currently struggling with Disney+ specifically
Sometimes working:
- CyberGhost — US Disney+ works 60% of the time, other regions inconsistent
- Proton VPN Plus — US works most days, other regions blocked
Not bothering with:
- Mullvad, IVPN, free VPNs — all 0% on Disney+
Why Disney+ is harder than Netflix
Disney+ has invested in serious VPN detection since 2024:
- Active IP blocklist updates (more frequent than Netflix’s)
- Aggressive behavioral checks (rapid IP changes flag accounts)
- Account-level geo-locking (your Disney+ account is region-locked to your signup country; you need a workaround to use it in another region)
- 2025 lawsuit settlements with several “VPN-friendly” hosting providers force IP blocking
The result: VPNs that work flawlessly on Netflix struggle with Disney+.
The full setup for Disney+ VPN
Step 1: Pick a working VPN (NordVPN or Surfshark are our top picks)
NordVPN currently has the highest Disney+ unblock rate. Surfshark is the cheapest reliable option.
Step 2: Be aware of the account-region issue
Your Disney+ account is region-locked to where you originally signed up. If you signed up for Disney+ US, you can stream Disney+ US from anywhere with a US VPN. You CANNOT stream Disney+ UK from your US Disney+ account — even with a UK VPN.
Solutions:
– If you have a Disney+ US account and want US content from abroad: any of our top 3 VPNs work.
– If you want UK Disney+ content (different library): you need to either travel to the UK to sign up, OR cancel your US Disney+ and sign up fresh from a UK VPN with a UK payment method (Wise, Revolut UK, or paid gift card).
Step 3: Use a clean browser session
Open private/incognito window. Disable WebRTC. Set language to the target region’s language. Connect to VPN before opening Disney+ (not after).
Step 4: Pick the right city server
- For Disney+ US: NordVPN’s “United States” auto-pick is fine. Avoid less-trafficked cities.
- For Disney+ UK: NordVPN “UK – London” or Surfshark “UK – London”.
- For Disney+ Japan: ExpressVPN “Japan – Yokohama” has been most reliable.
- For Disney+ Brazil: NordVPN “Brazil” auto-pick.
Why the Marvel/Star Wars timing matters
Disney releases their premium content in different windows by country:
- US: typically the global “first release”
- UK, Australia, Canada: within a few days, sometimes simultaneous
- EU (non-UK): 2-12 weeks later
- Asian markets: highly variable, sometimes ahead of US (Korea), sometimes behind (Japan)
- LatAm: typically 1-4 weeks after US
If you’re patient, the content arrives in your region eventually. If you want it Day 1 — that’s why you need a VPN.
Real-world performance (Q2 2026)
We watch new Marvel/Star Wars releases as they drop in each region:
| VPN | US Disney+ | UK Disney+ | JP Disney+ | BR Disney+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 95% | 93% | 88% | 90% |
| Surfshark | 92% | 90% | 80% | 85% |
| ExpressVPN | 70% | 75% | 65% | 60% |
| CyberGhost | 65% | 55% | 50% | 50% |
| Proton VPN Plus | 70% | 60% | 40% | 35% |
(Tested from US East. Other geographies may differ.)
The Disney+ Hulu ESPN+ bundle question
US Disney+ subscriptions are often bundled with Hulu and ESPN+. If you’re outside the US using a VPN to access your US Disney+, you can also access Hulu and ESPN+ through that VPN.
This bundle ($21.99/mo) is dramatically cheaper than buying the three separately ($16+$8+$11). For sports + Disney content fans abroad, this stack works well with NordVPN as the VPN.
Speed performance
Disney+ streams 4K HDR for premium subscriptions. The VPN needs to maintain 25+ Mbps sustained.
Our tested VPNs at 4K Disney+ streaming:
- NordVPN: averaged 220 Mbps on US, never dropped below 80 Mbps
- Surfshark: averaged 180 Mbps on US, occasional drops to 30 Mbps (still 4K-capable)
- ExpressVPN: averaged 240 Mbps on US, most consistent
- CyberGhost: averaged 120 Mbps, sometimes dropped to 4K-borderline
For 4K, all three top picks are sufficient.
Common Disney+ VPN errors and fixes
“Error code 73” / “Disney+ is not available in your region”: VPN IP detected. Try a different server.
“Error code 83”: Account-region mismatch. Your Disney+ account is registered to one country; you’re trying to access from a server in another country. You can’t fix this server-side; you need to use a server in your account’s region.
“Streaming stopped” mid-watch: Disney+ detected an IP change during your session. Make sure your VPN doesn’t auto-switch servers. Stick to one server per session.
“This title is not available in your region”: Content licensing. Even with a working VPN, some titles are only available in specific countries (often more in JP/KR for anime, less in EU/UK for newer Marvel).
Mobile and TV apps
The Disney+ mobile app uses GPS location signals beyond IP. To use Disney+ on mobile via VPN:
- Easier: use Disney+ in mobile Safari/Chrome instead of the native app
- Harder: spoof GPS to the VPN’s location (requires Android dev mode or iOS jailbreak)
Disney+ on smart TV / streaming sticks:
- Apple TV: install VPN’s native Apple TV app (NordVPN, ExpressVPN have them) → connect → launch Disney+
- Fire TV: install VPN’s Fire TV app → connect → launch Disney+
- Roku: Roku doesn’t allow VPN apps. You need to configure VPN at the router level. The ExpressVPN Aircove router or any VPN-capable router works.
- Chromecast: depends on the model. Newer Chromecast with Google TV supports VPN apps.
What about free VPNs for Disney+?
Don’t bother. We tested 5:
- Proton VPN Free: No US servers on free tier
- Windscribe Free: US server works occasionally for Netflix but Disney+ blocks it
- TunnelBear, Hotspot Shield, Atlas: All fail on Disney+
You need a paid VPN. Surfshark at ~$2.30/mo is the floor.
The cost-per-region analysis
If you want to access Disney+ in 4 regions (US, UK, JP, BR):
| VPN | Annual cost | Avg unblock | Cost per successful day across regions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surfshark | $50 | 87% | $0.16 |
| NordVPN | $105 | 92% | $0.31 |
| ExpressVPN | $100 | 68% | $0.40 |
Surfshark wins on value. NordVPN wins on absolute reliability.

Using a VPN to access Disney+ from outside your account’s region violates Disney+’s terms of service. The most common consequence is a temporary account lockout. You’re responsible for understanding the implications in your jurisdiction.
